Environment & Sustainability

When we talk of sustainability we mean maintaining the long term viability of our businesses by minimising our impacts on the natural environment. We believe that our operations, products and services should have a positive impact on the environment and that the environment is a key consideration in everything we do.

Fair Dinkum Sheds and Stramit advances sustainability by:

  • Ensuring our products and services lead to better environmental efficiency in our customers' buildings and infrastructure
  • Eliminating or minimising waste from our products, services and workplaces
  • Finding and implementing economic energy-efficient solutions for our businesses

A range of strategies support our sustainability commitment, including the use of recycled materials wherever possible, the use of renewable energy and the introduction of new technologies to our industrial processes. We are also achieving greater energy efficiency through plant and equipment improvements.

Our parent company, Fletcher Building,  has an Executive Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Council chaired by CEO Jonathan Ling. This has been formed to provide direction and coordination to our continuing efforts to reduce our environmental footprint and to improve communications and effectiveness on these issues.

Targeting Emissions

Fletcher Building has set a group-wide CO2 emissions reduction target of 5% between 2008 and 2012 (using 2007 actual emissions as the reference), and assuming similar levels of production in 2012.

Fletcher Building emits approximately 1.3 million tonnes of CO2 each year.  The largest source of emissions is the Golden Bay Cement plant, which emits approximately 600,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.  Other energy-intensive processes include manufacturing steel, medium density fibreboard, laminates, plasterboard and fibreglass insulation.

Irrespective of emissions-intensity, all business units are required to prepare plans to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions to help Fletcher Building achieve a reduction of 5% CO2 emissions.  Energy-intense operations have identified specific emission-reduction projects.

The most significant opportunities for emission reductions are fuel substitution and product composition changes for cement.  Golden Bay Cement has been progressively increasing its use of wood waste as a supplementary fuel, and has achieved a substitution rate of 25%.

Fletcher Building has submitted reports to the Carbon Disclosure Project since 2006. The most recent report can be found on their website.  Fletcher Building is also a participant in New Zealand's emissions trading scheme.
